New research by The Cooperative Insurance has found that dog and cat owners across the UK are likely to spend close to £100 million on family pets this Christmas.

The company found that pet owners may spend an extra 10 per cent on their pets compared to figures released in 2009, making a rise of £11.78 spent per pooch this holiday.

The findings contradict other statistics which show that over 40 per cent of people buying their family presents this Christmas will be forking out less cash than last year.

It seems a dog really is a man’s best friend, as further data reveals that one in four Britain’s plan not to even buy their relatives and loved ones anything at all.
